Police on lookout bfor a youth who reportedly harassed her
A Class IX girl allegedly committed suicide at home after being insulted and harassed by an eve teaser at Sanathnagar in the city. Karri Soumya, 15, was spat on by a local youth called Nani after she retorted to his vulgar acts on Wednesday evening, police said.
Daughter of K. Govinda Rao, an electrician, and Parvati, a daily wage worker, Soumya was studying in the Patamata ZP High School along with her sister, a Class VII student.
She was allegedly found hanging from the ceiling fan by her mother and uncle at around 6.30 p.m.
Even as her parents were making arrangements to perform the last rites of the girl in the night, neighbours informed police that the girl had reportedly committed suicide.
Police personnel, who visited the girl’s house, were not allowed to inspect the girl’s body by the parents, who refused to lodge any complaint. They claimed she died due to severe stomach ache.
On persuasion by local political leaders, police and others, the family allowed the police to inspect the body and lodged a complaint in the wee hours, Penamaluru police said.
Police questioned the victim’s younger sister and friends who revealed that Nani had been following Soumya and harassing her daily on way to school.
“The girls stated that the accused even beat Soumya from behind and teased always. On Wednesday, Soumya retorted with a warning that she would slap him with a slipper. The accused then allegedly spat on the victim and insulted her. Later she was found hanging at home,” Penamaluru SI D. Satya Surendra told The Hindu.
Case registered
A case under Section 306 of IPC for abetment of suicide has been registered against him and police are looking for the youth believed to be aged between 18 and 20.
